I wanted to switch over from the standard wide ratio Claris cassette (11-28 8spd - 11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28) to a more close ratio unit to be able to ride the bike more in the midrange. I dont have very steep hills where I live, and I barely used the cogs from 21,24 & 28 in my original 8 speed cassette. And i barely used the 11 tooth cog too. Most of the usage was of the remaining 4 cogs i.e 13,15,17 & 19 tooth. I wanted a 12-25 tooth, but since I couldnt find stock at that time, I bought the 12-23 tooth cassette itself. This cassette has the same gearing as a 11 spd 105 (11-28), but without the 11, 25,28 tooth cogs. So that means that the shifts on the Claris groupset itself are nearly as good as the 105 unit in most situations
After changing over to the close ratio 12-23 unit, it took a while to re-calibrate my riding. And now its a lot better than before, especially on the flat sections. I can ride at very good cadence and ride faster too.
I have even done the Nandi Hill climb (50-34 crank and 12-23 cassette) and it wasnt too hard, except that i had to be in 1-1 gear in the hairpin bends at nandi.
So, overall, I am happy with this gearing and product and I would recommend it if you're looking to ride faster and maintain good cadence and dont want to leave the 8 speed world.
